It's been a fast pace of activity in WMI since our last KIT Notice, with our students stepping up to a range of challenges.
Last Monday saw a group of our students competing successfully in the Zones Cross Country. Tuesday was the Rotary Club quiz where Meredith and Alex competed against 19 other schools at this awesome evening at Lincoln University. On Thursday 25 WMI leaders took part in the National Young Leaders Day event at Horncastle Arena which involved inspirational speakers and activities, and networking with other young leaders from across the area. Goal setting interviews on Thursday and Friday allowed us to share your child's learning and personal goals and next steps in their learning. Today 25 students are taking part in the hockey and football winter tournament in Rolleston and we wish them all the best at this awesome event. Financial Literacy Inquiry 'Dragons' Den' interviews have been completed and all teams have had their business projects approved and funded where requested. The learners are now working towards having their product or service ready for Gala Day which is planned for Friday of Week 9. Please check in with your child about their Inquiry progress, offer support where needed but remember that they are effectively running their business and need to be accountable for their business decisions. Dates for your diary Tuesday June 11th - WMI open afternoon / evening 3-4.30 and 7-8.30 (your child may be involved in presenting to prospective students during the event) Friday 14th June - School Disco Wednesday 19th June - Canterbury Cross Country Friday 28th June (TBC) - Financial Literacy Inquiry Gala Day Please email Anna or Aaron if you didn't get an appointment for Goal Setting, so that we can catch up in the next two weeks - thanks. Hello parents and caregivers,
As we post this KIT notice, we are surrounded by WMI learners fully engrossed and engaged in their Financial Literacy Inquiry, working hard to finalise their team proposals ready for Dragons' Den presentations over the next few weeks. The inquiry has been challenging, both academically and emotionally, and we are very excited to see their finished products and hopefully their profitable success! All profit made will be shared directly with the group members to go towards their Wellington Camp. A big thank you to everyone who came along to the fundraising meeting, we had a very productive discussion about fundraising projects that we could run to reduce the costs of the Wellington camp for all families. A Facebook Messenger group has been set up called WMI Fundraisers 2019 if you are interested in getting involved. Please visit the maths page to learn about visual learning in mathematics. Some upcoming events: Monday - Zones Cross Country Tuesday - Rotary Intermediate Quiz - Alex G and Meredith R representing WMI Wednesday - Teachers' strike - school closed Thursday - National Young Leaders' Day, Horncastle Arena (Ambassadors, Whānau Leaders and Student Exec attending with Mrs Jenkins) - Goal Setting Meetings afternoon (Mr T) and evening (Mr T and Mrs J) Friday - Goal Setting Meetings all day (students only attend at time of their meeting). Future weeks: Winter tournament week 7- hockey and football, trials and training underway Gala Day - WMI Financial Inquiry - Week 9 Thanks for your continued help and support to our WMI learning adventures! Regards Mr T and Mrs J We hope everyone had a fantastic break over the term holidays. This term is extremely busy for us as we ramp up our learning around financial literacy. This Inquiry unit will focus around a business plan to sell goods or a service for Gala Day. The money raised will go towards our Wellington Camp. Please ask your child what they have been doing so that they may be successful with their venture.
On Monday we had our school cross country. It was a great effort by all students who competed. All students should be proud of themselves as they all gave it 100%. Well done to Brooklyn who broke the Year 7 Boys school record. Also thanks to all those year 7 and 8s who helped out with the younger students, you were amazing role models and an asset to WMI. On Monday we have the ASB Get Wise Team coming out to see us. Students will be learning about financial planning, how to make your money work and other great initiatives. Wednesday will see us back at Hornby High. The students have swapped their technology classes and they all seem excited and motivated to get the most out of it. If you would like to see how technology works at Hornby High please feel free to email me and we can show you around. On the 21 May we are holding a fundraising evening for parents. We need your help and for you to have an understanding of how these events are planning out, and this meeting will explain this to you. We will begin at 6.00 and finish approximately 6.30. Venue WMI classroom. On 11 June we will be holding our open evening for WMI. Students run this event and it is a great way to see their developing leaderships skills put to good to use. We are changing things this year with 2 sessions. One beginning at 3.15 through to 4.30pm and the other from 7pm through to 8.15pm. We will notify the students in the next two weeks if they are part of the presentation. Please pass this information on to any new prospective parents that you may know about. Take care Aaron and Anna We are heading towards the end of Term 1, and we have come a long way in ten weeks! It is fantastic to see how the WMI students are working together, looking out for each other and managing their own learning and relationships. Today, with both sadness and happiness, we farewelled Leisha and wished her luck in her new big adventure. Leisha has been an extremely hardworking, passionate and valued member of the WMI and school community for a number of years and she will be very much missed by staff and students. The Ambassadors presented speeches and an original song for Leisha was composed and performed by a group of our talented learners. We then shared a morning tea together. Thanks to all students, parents and helpers that made the second camp to Quail Island such a success. The learners are already starting to plan the finer details of our Wellington Trip in November, and next term we will be organising our fundraising and enterprise activities that will help to fund this exciting adventure. Also, next term, we will be inquiring into growth mindset, resilience and physical fitness in relation to sports. If any parents or family members are able to help us out with specialist sports coaching in any sport or physical activity, we will be running sports rotations on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Please contact Anna or Aaron if you can commit to any of these afternoons for the first five weeks of Term 2. We hope you have a fun and relaxing holiday planned. Please read the attached letter and email Rita if you wish to participate. Thank you WMS Sport Team Quail Island photosAs I sit here writing this notice I am wondering where has the year gone? It seems not so long ago that the new start of the school year had begun. After recent tragic events we hope that you and your family are safe and well.
Next week our second camp group goes on camp. Mrs Jenkins has organised the students to take their gear list home as well as their food lists. Please ensure your child shows and explains the reasoning for the items on the list. Hopefully it will remain dry! Next week Mr T and 17 students from West Melton School will be going to the Canterbury Duathlon. We wish all students the best of luck as we are sure they will do us proud. We are promoting being the best we can be and it's great to see these students challenge themselves against other students from around Canterbury. We have seen a real positive shift around having a growth mindset which has enabled the students to be more resilient and learn from their misconceptions. A reminder that dates for the Wellington Camp is from the 25th- 29th November. If you are able to assist please could you let either Aaron or Anna know so we can organise our parent helpers. If you could let us know if you are interested by 5th of April that would be great. Inquiry- just to inform our community parents the students' Inquiry around our Wednesday bus safety has been resolved in the short term through the students' hard work. Firstly I would like to thank the Board of Trustees who organised another bus for us in Week 7 so we could travel safely. The Ministry has now decided to fund another bus for us permanently so each week will be able to split into the two buses. This does not solve the big problem that we recognise and students will be given an opportunity to make a difference nationally. Great work team! WMI are speeding through the term, and we are excited that very soon we will be heading to Quail Island for our first overnight experience. The learners have been busy planning their own menus, budgets, equipment and gear lists. On the Friday students have the opportunity to purchase fish and chips for their lunch. Prices will be given to students for them to organise. Mr T's camp group need to have their tents at school on Monday as well as the gas burners. We will store these in our classroom. Students have made their own gear lists and cooking lists with their groups. These should be shared with parents either today or Monday. Don't forget your sleeping bags! Thanks to all the wonderful parents who have offered to help out with our camp and have provided gear, we really appreciate your support. Students will need to be at school by 8.30 on Thursday so that we can load the trailer and leave for the Bridal Path. We will be back at school for 3pm on Friday.
Tech is now taking place at Hornby High School in their innovative new Technology building. Below are some images of what our learners have been offered as Tech opportunities. Thanks to all those parents who have generously offered their time and fuel to transport learners to Tech. WMI students are taking risks and stepping up to leadership roles. Congratulations to all those who have become whānau leaders, librarians, peer mediators, road patrollers and bus monitors. Further leadership positions coming up in the next few weeks include Technicians, Office managers, Flag monitors, PALs and Sport Shed monitors. Mr Taylor has been working very hard with his inquiry students to raise the profile of school bus safety, whilst Mrs Jenkins' team have been re-imagining our learning spaces and systems to enable our learners to develop their 21st century deep learning skills. Thank you for your participation in our goal setting meetings for Term 1. A copy of the goal setting sheet that was completed at the meeting will be sent home with your child today so that you can be involved in helping your child to work towards achieving their goals. Wellington Camp- As you may be aware WMI will be travelling to Wellington for four nights/ five days. Costs for transport and food have been confirmed. We have set up a payment plan on our on-line shop so payments can be spread out if required. This initial amount of $300.00 is needed to pay deposits to finalise bookings. We are hoping to cover the rest of the costs through fundraising. If for any reason your child will not be attending the Wellington Camp can you please let either Anna or Aaron know before the 20th of March. Dates for Wellington are 25th-29th of November. Some upcoming dates: Monday 11th March - Science Roadshow Tuesday 12th March - Selwyn Zone Swim Sports Thursday 14 - Friday 15th March - Group 1 Quail Island Camp Thursday 28 - Friday 29th March - Group 2 Quail Island Camp Sunday 31st March - West Melton Fete Regards Aaron Taylor and Anna Jenkins What a fantastic start to the year. The students are slowly stepping up to meet the challenges that WMI are involved in. Congratulations to all students that presented at the Whanau Leaders Presentation last Tuesday. I know Mrs Jenkins had a tough time choosing the Leaders for this coming year. It has been an extremely busy week with our Inquiries moving into full pace and of course with the goal setting meetings. We have been very impressed with the students' goals and the strategies they have identified to be successful. We as teachers have found it valuable to connect with parents and students at such an early stage in the year. Thank you so much for the support around our transport issue for technology. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to make an authentic plan to change for the better how we are transported to Hornby High. If you can help out next Wednesday with drop off/ pick up or both please let me know. Next Friday is mufti day. Students will be asked to bring in a donation of some form of chocolate to be used for prizes at the upcoming fete. The first Quail Island trip is not far away. Thank you to the parents who are helping us with this experience. Hopefully the weather will play its part. Students will begin to make their gear and food lists next week. We have confirmed dates for our Wellington trip. These dates are Monday the 25th of November through to Friday the 29th of November. We will be travelling up by train to Picton then ferry across to Wellington. On Friday we will be travelling back by plane (timings to be confirmed). Welcome to the first KIT notice of the year for WMI! The first two weeks of term have been a chance for the students to settle into their new spaces, build relationships and to start developing our routines and expectations to allow our community to operate as an exciting and equitable learning environment. We are lucky enough to have 66 students in WMI this year and welcome 6 new families to WMI. We are looking forward to seeing what all of these amazing learners achieve during the year.
The duathlon was an awesome event on Tuesday, with both competitive and non-competitive athletes showing great vitality and participation. WMI students also stepped up, as always, to help coordinate the event and assist the younger students. Some notices:

Looking forward to the coming year, working together to encourage your children to exceed all of our expectations! Regards Aaron Taylor and Anna Jenkins |
