As I sit here writing this notice I am wondering where has the year gone? It seems not so long ago that the new start of the school year had begun. After recent tragic events we hope that you and your family are safe and well.
Next week our second camp group goes on camp. Mrs Jenkins has organised the students to take their gear list home as well as their food lists. Please ensure your child shows and explains the reasoning for the items on the list. Hopefully it will remain dry! Next week Mr T and 17 students from West Melton School will be going to the Canterbury Duathlon. We wish all students the best of luck as we are sure they will do us proud. We are promoting being the best we can be and it's great to see these students challenge themselves against other students from around Canterbury. We have seen a real positive shift around having a growth mindset which has enabled the students to be more resilient and learn from their misconceptions. A reminder that dates for the Wellington Camp is from the 25th- 29th November. If you are able to assist please could you let either Aaron or Anna know so we can organise our parent helpers. If you could let us know if you are interested by 5th of April that would be great. Inquiry- just to inform our community parents the students' Inquiry around our Wednesday bus safety has been resolved in the short term through the students' hard work. Firstly I would like to thank the Board of Trustees who organised another bus for us in Week 7 so we could travel safely. The Ministry has now decided to fund another bus for us permanently so each week will be able to split into the two buses. This does not solve the big problem that we recognise and students will be given an opportunity to make a difference nationally. Great work team! WMI are speeding through the term, and we are excited that very soon we will be heading to Quail Island for our first overnight experience. The learners have been busy planning their own menus, budgets, equipment and gear lists. On the Friday students have the opportunity to purchase fish and chips for their lunch. Prices will be given to students for them to organise. Mr T's camp group need to have their tents at school on Monday as well as the gas burners. We will store these in our classroom. Students have made their own gear lists and cooking lists with their groups. These should be shared with parents either today or Monday. Don't forget your sleeping bags! Thanks to all the wonderful parents who have offered to help out with our camp and have provided gear, we really appreciate your support. Students will need to be at school by 8.30 on Thursday so that we can load the trailer and leave for the Bridal Path. We will be back at school for 3pm on Friday.
Tech is now taking place at Hornby High School in their innovative new Technology building. Below are some images of what our learners have been offered as Tech opportunities. Thanks to all those parents who have generously offered their time and fuel to transport learners to Tech. WMI students are taking risks and stepping up to leadership roles. Congratulations to all those who have become whānau leaders, librarians, peer mediators, road patrollers and bus monitors. Further leadership positions coming up in the next few weeks include Technicians, Office managers, Flag monitors, PALs and Sport Shed monitors. Mr Taylor has been working very hard with his inquiry students to raise the profile of school bus safety, whilst Mrs Jenkins' team have been re-imagining our learning spaces and systems to enable our learners to develop their 21st century deep learning skills. Thank you for your participation in our goal setting meetings for Term 1. A copy of the goal setting sheet that was completed at the meeting will be sent home with your child today so that you can be involved in helping your child to work towards achieving their goals. Wellington Camp- As you may be aware WMI will be travelling to Wellington for four nights/ five days. Costs for transport and food have been confirmed. We have set up a payment plan on our on-line shop so payments can be spread out if required. This initial amount of $300.00 is needed to pay deposits to finalise bookings. We are hoping to cover the rest of the costs through fundraising. If for any reason your child will not be attending the Wellington Camp can you please let either Anna or Aaron know before the 20th of March. Dates for Wellington are 25th-29th of November. Some upcoming dates: Monday 11th March - Science Roadshow Tuesday 12th March - Selwyn Zone Swim Sports Thursday 14 - Friday 15th March - Group 1 Quail Island Camp Thursday 28 - Friday 29th March - Group 2 Quail Island Camp Sunday 31st March - West Melton Fete Regards Aaron Taylor and Anna Jenkins |
